  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">GHANA</span><span class="style42">Official name:</span><span class="style13"> The Republic of Ghana</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, OAU, Commonwealth, ECOWAS</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">238533 km2 (92099 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">15635000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Accra 1580000 (includes Tema 190000) (1988 est)</span><span class="style42">Other major cities: </span><span class="style13">Kumasi 490000, Sekondi-Takoradi 175000, Tamale 170000 (1988 est)</span><span class="style42">Languages: </span><span class="style13">English (official), Asante, Ewe, Ga</span><span class="style42">Religions: </span><span class="style13">Various Protestant Churches (30%),  Roman Catholic (over 25%), Sunni Islam (20%), animist (17%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The 200-member House of Parliament and a President are elected for four years by universal adult suffrage. The President appoints a 25-member Council of State.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">Most of the country is low-lying plains and plateau. The central Volta Basin ΓÇô which ends in steep escarpments ΓÇô contains the large Lake Volta reservoir. </span><span class="style42">Principal river: </span><span class="style13">Volta 1600 km (1000 mi). </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The climate is tropical with 2000 mm (80 in) of rainfall on the coast, decreasing markedly inland. The north is subject to the hot, dry Harmattan wind from the Sahara.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Political instability and mismanagement damaged the economy in the 1970s and 1980s. Nearly one half of the labor force is involved in farming. Cocoa is the main cash crop. Timber and mining for bauxite, gold and diamonds are important. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Cedi.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Trade for gold, ivory and slaves led to the establishment of European coastal stations from around 1600. Britain ousted the Danes (1850) and the Dutch (1872) to establish the Gold Coast colony in 1874. The great inland kingdom of Ashanti was not finally conquered until 1898. After World War II, the prosperity of the cocoa industry, increasing literacy and the dynamism of Dr Kwame Nkrumah (1909ΓÇô72) helped the Gold Coast set the pace for decolonization in Black Africa. After independence in 1957 ΓÇô as Ghana ΓÇô NkrumahΓÇÖs grandiose policies and increasingly dictatorial rule led to his overthrow in a military coup in 1966. Ghana has since struggled to overcome its economic and political problems. There were six coups in 20 years, including two by Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings (1979 and 1982). A multi-party system was restored in 1992.</span></text>
